Liebenwalde
Liebenwalde is an important hub for water tourists: three canals crisscross the town, offering opportunities for tours past trees and playful bridges. One special route is over the Finow Canal - a 400-year-old man-made waterway with 12 historic locks. Visitors can paddle here from the Liebenwalde city harbor to the Niederfinow ship lift. Cyclists and hikers explore the idyllic shore via the towpath, from which barges were once pulled across the canal by muscle power. In Liebenwalde itself, Karl Friedrich Schinkel left his mark; the architect helped plan the historic town church. Nearby, there is a museum of local history of an unusual kind: The cells of the former town prison tell with various exhibits about the economic upswing of the town due to the Finow Canal or about the life of its former inmates.
