Fürstenberg - also called the Pearl of the Havel - is the heart of the forest and lake area at the entrance to the Mecklenburg Lake District. The strategically favorable location between Brandenburg, Mecklenburg and the former Pomerania made Fürstenberg a shipping and trading town for a long time. The Baroque castle in the north of the core town bears witness to the time when Fürstenberg belonged to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The neo-Gothic town church, the Havel Park and the ruins of the old moated castle invite visitors to take a stroll on the main island, while the Ravensbrück memorial site revisits a dark chapter of German history. The direct connection to the Havel River is the ideal starting point to explore the fascinating surroundings by boat. No wonder the city has been a popular vacation destination since 1870.
