Henningsdorf The gate to Berlin
A walk in the countryside, a climbing adventure or a stroll along the banks of the Havel: Hennigsdorf offers all this. Once a small fishing village, Hennigsdorf developed into an important industrial location in the 20th century as a production site for aircraft, locomotives and steel, and is now home mainly to technology companies. A stone's throw from Berlin and separated only by the Havel River, the town was also a border town to West Berlin in GDR times. One of the last remaining GDR watchtowers, from which soldiers guarded the Berlin Wall at the time, still bears witness to this in the district of Nieder Neuendorf. During a walk along the green lakeside promenade, visitors today have a wonderful view of the capital, can jump into the cool water at the natural bathing area or make a detour to the Nieder Neuendorf marina. There is also plenty to discover on a walk from the historic centre of Hennigsdorf with the Old Town Hall and the Havel Passage to the city harbour.
