The unspoilt River Havel wanders through the district of Oberhavel. The bank is usually overgrown with shrubs on one side but the other side is ideal for fishing. As there are only a few bridges along the way, shore anglers should look at the satellite pictures first to avoid having to walk around long stretches of shrubbery along the bank. The river is on average barely deeper than one metre but the channels and hollows are up to 2.5 metres deep. The bottom is mainly sandy but does have slimy hollows in places, some of which can be very deep. Therefore, you should proceed with caution when wading. Water lilies and weeds thrive in this shallow, slow-moving water.
That is why the Schnelle Havel area is in part difficult to fish in summer. A boat tour is therefore definitely worth recommending. In the river, the hotspots under overhanging trees are best for casting. There are also cut-off meanders along this stretch, which essentially cannot be fished from the bank. But in a boat, you can manoeuvre with ease between the water lilies and set the bait carefully between the weeds.
Carp bustle about in the cut-off meanders and actively approach drills. The river also offers asp measuring over 70 centimetres who are willing to put up a good fight, as well as perch that tip the 40 centimetre mark.
The Schnelle Havel is managed by the Kreisanglerverband Oberhavel angling association under waterway number P 14-204. Guest permits are available. Paying members of the Landesverbände DAV Berlin and LAV Brandenburg angling associations can fish here free of charge.
