Lake Wittwesee is up to twelve metres deep in places and has very clear waters. Rare stoneworts are to be found here. In addition, this gem of a lake is surrounded by various cane plants: these provide a suitable habitat for rich fauna (bittern, great crested grebe). Furthermore, the lake is embedded in a monotonous pine forest which is currently being ecologically restructured to create a mixed forest. This is due to the fact that deciduous trees evaporate less water than coniferous trees, allowing the groundwater level of the area to rise again. The name of Lake Wittwesee comes from the Slavic for “branch” or “twig”. The lake has a surface area of 160 hectares and is owned by the NABU Foundation. The area is closed to cars.
