Meseberg – Prussian Memorial Sites
Major Christian Ludwig von Kaphengst lived at the Meseberg estate from 1774 onwards, the purchase having been financed by Frederick’s brother Prince Henry. The reason for this generous donation was the removal of Kaphengst from the Rheinsberg court as ordered by the Prince’s brother. Kaphengst previously lived at Rheinsberg Palace as Prince Henry’s favourite minion. The Kavalierhaus on the side of the palace and the conversion of some of the rooms into an apartment are evidence of the visits paid by Prince Henry.
Federal Government Guest House
The recently restored palace is owned by the Messerschmitt Foundation and is now used as an official guest house by the German Federal Government. It is set amid an extensive, restored Baroque garden by the shores of Lake Huwenowsee with its pavilion, terraces, vineyard, snail pit and pond meadow. The palace and gardens can be visited on the annual open day; a landscape garden open to the public runs alongside the lake. In terms of remaining evidence of the above-mentioned owners of the palace, the burial place of the von Wartensleben family and the patronage box in the church have been preserved, as has the tombstone of Kaphengst, who was buried in the main nave of the church.
