Steinhavel Lock is located at kilometre 64.60 of the Upper Havel Waterway in the Steinförde area northwest of Fürstenberg/Havel in the Oberhavel district. The lock is situated on the so-called Steinhavel, a little-used section of the River Havel between the lakes Menowsee and Röblinsee.

Since the Upper Havel waterway is no longer used by cargo ships but only by a few small passenger ships, it has developed into a popular area for sports boats of all sizes and classes.
