The green gate of Brandenburg
Berliners have been drawn to Brandenburg's suburban belts for more than just a few years. Clara Zetkin settled in Birkenwerder, also known as the green gate of Brandenburg, in 1929. The memorial named after her gives visitors an insight into the life of the politician and women's rights activist. For nature lovers, Birkenwerder has, among other things, the Boddensee lake with a lake terrace, the Briesesee lake and a network of numerous forest and hiking trails to offer. Around half of the municipality consists of woodland. If you cross the old town centre on the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route, you will find the historic Louise-Henriette fountain, which used to supply the residents with water. The sculpture boulevard between Birkenwerder and Hohen Neuendorf is also worth seeing. From there, the path leads through a dreamy park landscape to the Briese River, which meanders through the entire town. No wonder Birkenwerder advanced to become a tranquil villa suburb at the beginning of the 20th century.
