The first stage of the Havel Cycle Path covers 64 kilometres from the source of the river in Ankershagen/Pieverstorf to Fürstenberg/Havel. The route leads through the Mecklenburg Lake District and there are lots of opportunities to swim along the way. Via Wesenberg, you come to the State of Brandenburg by Großmenow and shortly after that the waterside town Fürstenberg/Havel.

Length: 64 kilometres

Start: Havelquelle close to Ankershagen/Pieversdorf, accessible from Kratzeburg railway station - to the Havelquelle in the opposite direction another approx. 10 km, or Waren (Müritz) railway station - approx. 35 km to the Havelquelle, also signposted.

Finish: Fürstenberg/Havel

Logo/route sign: dark blue sign with a curved light blue band, an orange bicycle and the name in white letters

How to get there: Take the RE5 (Rostock) from Berlin central station to Kratzeburg. From here, you either cycle in the direction of Berlin of travel for about 10 kilometres in the opposite direction to start at the source of the River Havel (about 1.5 hours).

Return journey: From Fürstenberg/Havel, take the RE5 regional train (Wünsdorf-Waldstadt) to Berlin central station (about 1 hour).

Route: Kratzeburg (to the source via Pieversdorf in the opposite direction, about 10 kilometres), Blankenförde, Kakeldütt, Useriner Mühle, Wesenberg, Neu Canow, Strasen, Großmenow, Steinförde, Fürstenberg/Havel

  • Fürstenberg: Ravensbrück Remembrance and Memorial Site, town church
