The temple garden is a place with a special historic background, because of the crown prince Frederick, later King Frederick the Great. He created it for himself as an extraordinary place of retreat away from his town seat for social gatherings, music, discussions with friends and for cultivating his own fruits and vegetables. The Apollo temple was Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorffs first work.

The merchant family Gentz redesigned the garden and its temple. They made a place of worship for King Frederick the Great. The architect Carl von Diebitsch orientalised the temple grounds. Since then, the garden was opened for public use and local events.
