The octagonal Dannenwalde church, which is now a listed building, was built in 1821 by master builder Hermann from Zehdenick (1784-1842) in the neo-Gothic style to replace a dilapidated medieval church.

The building was commissioned by the patron and lord of Dannenwalde Castle, the Vice-Land Marshal and Commendator of the Order of St. John, Ferdinand von Waldow (1765-1830). Through his spiritual wife Albertine, Dannenwalde Castle became a place of lively spiritual life for a time.

The church, which also houses the remains of the tombstone of two Lebus bishops "von Waldow" from the 15th century, was used for church services until 1975. It then fell into disrepair and was plundered but saved from destruction thanks to the commitment of the church elder.

In 1994, the Dannenwalder Förderkeis Kultur und Kirche am Weg e.V. was founded to bring the church back to life.

Thanks to the great - also financial - commitment of the von Waldow family and with the help of funding from the state, the regional church and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the exterior of the church was restored to its former beauty in 1998.

Restoration of the interior, which has so far only been renovated, is still pending.

Today, exhibitions, concerts, readings and church services are held here in the summer months.
