A joyful heron with a fish in its beak above an anvil and scythe. The coat of arms for Hennigsdorf illustrated the three traditions of the town in the Ruppiner Seenland Lake District at a glance. Know as an industrial location since the early 20th century, Hennigsdorf used to focus on agriculture and fishing for centuries before that. The former village is surrounded by lots of forest with the River Havel flowing by. Forest and water was also what the team from the popular television show “Löwenzahn” were looking for and found a permanent filming location in Hennigsdorf. And so the outskirts of the town of Hennigsdorf became the fictional district of “Bärstadt”.

The family show with the light blue construction trailer has been exciting children since the early eighties. For decades, Peter Lustig defined the format and presented the show, sometimes explaining things like an uncle, sometime singing happily. With the new main character Fritz Fuchs, there was a generation change in 2006 and with that a change of filming location too. While earlier episode were produced in Lichterfelde, Kleinmachnow or Neu-Fahrland, since 2012 Hennigsdorf has provided an ideal, unspoilt natural setting surrounded by trees and hedges.

Also in the countryside and just a few kilometres from Hennigsdorf is Schwante Castle, nestled into the impressive landscape of the Ruppiner Seenland Lake District. The former manor house with its three-wing architecture served as a backdrop for the film “Goethe!”, which told the story of the relationship between the law student Johann Wolfgang Goethe and his muse Lotte Buff. The hero of the film, Goethe, went through this romantic drama in emotional chaos, which ultimately inspired him to write his successful work “The Sorrows of Young Werther”.   

Sparse forests, quiet lakes and magnificent castles. In addition to captivating film locations, Hennigsdorf and the surrounding area offer visitors enticing cultural offerings. At the permanent exhibition in and around the Nieder Neuendorf Border Tower, history buffs can gain interesting insights into the history of the division between East and West and its effects on the town of Hennigsdorf.
