“Lindow is as lovely as its name suggests: it has grown up between three lakes, with old lime trees embracing it in their shade”: these are the words used by Theodor Fontane to express his feelings about this idyllically situated town, which he visited several times. But it was not until the third edition of his Walks through the Brandenburg Marches – The County of Ruppin, published in 1874, that he first mentioned Lindow. The three lakes he describes enthusiastically in his walks are Gudelacksee, Wutzsee and Vielitzsee. His novel “Der Stechlin” is a monument to the picturesque village of Lindow and its monastery.

“And in the rows of graves up and down,

The sweet calm of a summer’s evening,

Lingers at the half-decayed tombs”

This is how Fontane describes the cemetery at Lindow monastery, continuing: “The most beautiful parts of this park meadow are those where people are buried. Based on the sound instinct that life and death are siblings who should not fearfully avoid each other, the playgrounds and burial areas have been positioned close together and the same flowers blossom on both.” The monastery cemetery retains this distinctive atmosphere to this day: it is situated on the picturesque Lake Wutzsee and offers barrier-free access. Visitors will discovers massive tomb slabs in a range of styles from medieval to Baroque. They often features symbols of transience such as an hourglass or a poppy seed capsule.

The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Preservation) recognises the cemetery’s special status and provides ongoing funding for the restoration of the grave steles which date from several centuries.
