Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide is a heathland area located in the northwest of the state of Brandenburg in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin south of the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania between the towns of Wittstock, Röbel, Rheinsberg, Neuruppin and Kyritz. It is one of the largest contiguous heathland areas in Europe – situated directly between Berlin and Hamburg. As well as being a landscape area of national importance, it has also seen an eventful history, however. Up until 1993 the area was used by the Soviet army and went down in history as the “Bombodrome”.
