Between Birkenwerder and Wensickendorf, the Briese Valley opens up to reveal a landscape of almost fairy-tale beauty. The little river Briese meanders leisurely through hilly mixed deciduous woodland and unspoilt alder swamps, flows into marshes, collects in small lakes and, thanks to narrow footbridges and boardwalks, can be explored even in otherwise inaccessible spots. Along the way, Briesesee lake with its small sandy beach, a beer garden and the Alte Försterei just before Wensickendorf offer opportunities to take a breather.

Route: Birkenwerder - Wensickendorf

Tour description:

From Birkenwerder railway station, the route leads along Brieseallee, past Boddensee, through a wetland area behind the lake, and then out of the village. The Briesetal valley begins just beyond the Waldfriedhof cemetery. A boardwalk takes you across a marshy area. The route continues through the woods to Briesesee and the beer garden. Now begins the most beautiful and eventful part of the tour through the valley, shaped by the little river and lined with fir and deciduous trees. The 66-Lakes Hiking Trail follows the paths on the left bank. The Briese meanders, forming small lakes and marshy shore areas. Boardwalks and footbridges allow you to cross even wet areas without getting your feet wet. Beyond the Alte Försterei Wensickendorf, the route gradually leaves the narrow valley. Sandy paths lead northwards through pine forest. On this final stretch, the loose ground requires a little extra effort. Finally, you reach Wensickendorf, a traditional village in the Mark with a well-preserved centre and a medieval fieldstone church well worth seeing.

Path conditions: asphalt paths, paved paths, natural paths, paths with loose surfaces, gravel paths
