The town wall of Gransee is 1,750 metres long and almost fully preserved. The beautiful Late Gothic brick design of Ruppiner Tor (Ruppin Gate) makes it a real eye-catcher. A gallery in the gate building shows alternating exhibitions.

Gransee... “was a secure town, perhaps the most secure town in the county of Ruppin”, wrote Fontane in his account of his ramblings. You still get this impression today as you walk around the town walls of the 14th century.

There is a simple passageway to the side of Ruppiner Tor, known as the Waldemartor (Waldemar Gate). In the 14th century, the citizens of Grensee were conned by a “false Waldemar”. As punishment, they has to wall up the gate through which he entered the town unhindered and break open a smaller gate next to it in the town wall. The Prussian king only allowed the old town gate to be re-opened in 1818.
