Hussar general and “Zietenritt”
aufklappeneinklappen
Hans Joachim von Zieten (1699-1786) was one of Prussia’s most famous cavalry generals and close confidant to King Frederick the Great. In the wars fought under King Frederick II, Zieten proved capable as a general of the hussar regiment. The famous “Zietenritt” took place on May 20, 1745 when the general provided reinforcement for the king's main army. Overall, he had King Frederick the Great’s trust and received the King frequently. The latter even respected his deep religious beliefs.

Knight’s seat Wustrau

Since 1726, the genera lived in Wustrau, a knight's estate. During the years of peace, Zieten himself handled the economic affairs, for which he was granted leave several times by the King. King Frederick the Great even personally aided in the construction of a baroque manor house. The King ordered the delivery of construction material such as wood and limestone from Rüdersdorf to the estate free of charge. The later expanded manor house of Hans Joachim von Zieten – today the seat of the German knight academy (Ritterakademie) – remains an important attraction in Wustrau. Except during school holidays, the estate and manor can usually be visited Wednesdays. The annual lakeside festival, “Seefestival Wustrau” at the “Seebühne” invites guests to explore the knightly estate. The grave of the hussar general is located on the northern side of the church in Wustrau. Today, the Brandenburg-Preußen Museum attests to the history of the state.
