Right at the start of your hike, the manor park — one of the oldest landscaped parks in Brandenburg — welcomes you. The cultivated parkland blends almost seamlessly into the vast open landscapes of the Havelland. This shaded path, with fish ponds to your left and wide fields to your right, leads you to the small neighboring village of Meßdunk. In autumn, the area is especially rich in birdlife. On the wet meadows, water buffalo help keep the vegetation low, opening up sweeping views across the landscape. Shortly after the quiet little village, you’ll find a covered rest area, and from the quirky elevated “pipe lookout,” you can enjoy a wide, unobstructed view over the expanse of the fish ponds.

The trail continues past a weir and through typical Brandenburg pine forest until you reach Krahne. This village, which also belonged to the von Rochow estate, benefitted from the school reform as early as 1779, when the children here attended their own village school modeled after the one in Reckahn. Today, the former manor house hosts Kunstgut Krahne, an art gallery.

The return route follows hedge-lined fields, shaded by unusually tall locust and poplar trees. Soon, the stone pyramid comes into view — built to commemorate the devastating damage inflicted on the Rochow estates by the Prussian military camp of 1741.

Back in the center of Reckahn, be sure to visit the School Museum with its historic classroom, the Baroque church, and Reckahn Castle itself.

Tip: Plan some extra time to explore Reckahn! During opening hours at the Rochow Museum, you can borrow a free audio guide to explore the castle, the school museum, the manor park, and various listening stations around the village at your own pace.
