Starting at the campsite, the trail first follows the lakeshore for a short stretch before leading you through the village of Steckelsdorf. This typical Angerdorf (green village) was completely destroyed by fire in 1819 and rebuilt in its original layout. Next to the church stands the lovingly designed Frau Harke waymark. Frau Harke, the protective guardian spirit of the Havelland from Germanic legend, still watches over this spot – making it a particularly charming place to take a break.

As you leave the village, the path leads past lush wet meadows and horse pastures. For a while, the lake hides to your left behind robinia trees and tall reeds. Once you pass the small garden settlement, a higher path takes you through the woods with constant views of the water. Here and there, old pine trees line the way, their trunks marked with herringbone patterns – traces of resin harvesting during GDR times. The resin was collected and used as a base material for paints.

Soon, the open water gives way to the silting zones of the lake. In their place rises an impressive alder swamp forest, while on your right, a wooded slope ascends steeply. At the western end of the lake, you cross the Bruchbach stream, which channels water from the nearby Trittsee into Steckelsdorfer See. It carries very little water and, in summer, is often barely visible as a stream – the low wooden bridge is more than enough for the crossing.

Once you reach the southern shore, the lake reappears in view. The path now follows the shoreline back to the campsite, where you can finish your walk with a refreshing swim at the bathing area.

Tip: Stop by the village green for a dose of local history. At the audio station, Steckelsdorf residents share fascinating stories from the village’s past at the push of a button.
