The Linum ponds are located in the Rhin-Havelluch bird sanctuary (Special Protection Area, European Birds Directive). They form part of Brandenburg’s largest crane resting area. Around the pond area every October and November, the evening flight of several thousand cranes and geese can be observed – a phenomenon that is unique in Central Europe. In autumn 2009 there were over 80,000 cranes in the area at the peak of the birds’ resting season. The 36 ponds are also home to ospreys, sea eagles, grey herons, great white egrets, ducks, terns, kingfishers, marsh harriers, warblers and other species.

Tip:

During the day, the cranes can be observed particularly well in the harvested maize fields. The roads south of the A24 motorway offer a good viewing point (section: Fehrbellin-Linum-Clamps). The evening landing is best viewed directly by Linum. As sleeping sites and flight routes change, you should enquire about current favourable locations at the Storchenschmiede.

How to get there:

From the A24 motorway: Take the exit for Kremmen or Fehrbellin and follow signs to Linum. In Linum, please use a designated car park.
