When there is a rustic restaurant next to a bustling hair salon and hand-made furniture next to the local history museum, you are probably in the historic barn district in Kremmen. Just 30 kilometres from the big city hustle and bustle of Berlin, visitors can find a building ensemble that is unique throughout Germany with about 50 barns, lined up like pearls on a string. The listed area built in the 17th century is a centre for art, music and commerce. Here, locals meet visitors and gourmets meet craftspeople; lively bustle is part of everyday life in the historic barn district. Not quite so usual, on the other hand, but all the more exciting for it are the film shoots that took place in the nearby district of Linumhorst.

For the children’s film “Die Bücherdiebin” (The Book Thief), the listed steelwork bridge over the Alte Rhin was used as a backdrop for the film. The connection between Wustrau and Kremmen, which is currently open to pedestrians and cyclists, was as if it was made for Hollywood as a film location for this enthralling film adaptation. In the Oscar-nominated film, the protagonist Liesel Meminger learns to appreciate the power of the written word so much that she can use it to can escape tragic reality. 

Description: When young Liesel is exposed to the horrors of World War Two in Germany, she finds comfort in stealing books and sharing them with others. A Jewish refugee is in the cellar of her house being protected by her adoptive parents.
