The wooden observation tower is situated directly on the Heath Discovery Trail ("Heide-Erlebnisweg") and offers a stunning panoramic view of one of Germany’s largest contiguous heathland areas. The sweeping view is particularly memorable during the flowering months of August and September – when the heathland transforms into a sea of purple blossoms that seems to stretch all the way to the horizon.

From the tower, the heathland’s characteristic structure becomes visible: open spaces, scattered copses and a silence rarely interrupted by the sounds of nature. With a little patience, you can even spot typical inhabitants of the heath, including white-tailed eagles and hoopoes. Another particular highlight is the hardy Konik horses, which help to maintain the landscape by grazing there between June and October.

The Kyritz-Ruppiner Heath forms part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park and is protected as a National Natural Heritage Site. As an International Dark Sky Park, it also offers exceptionally dark nights far from artificial light sources – ideal conditions for experiencing the starry sky in all its clarity.

The history of the heath lends the area a special depth:

After the Second World War, the area was used as a restricted military zone for decades. It was only through the efforts of the ‘Freie Heide’ initiative that the area was gradually opened up to the public. Even as you climb the steps to the viewing platform, information boards along the way provide detailed insights into the landscape’s eventful history – turning the ascent itself into a brief journey through time.

The Heideturm brings this transformation to life: the view stretches across a landscape that has evolved from a closed-off military site into an open natural paradise – a place that invites you to pause and reflect.
