From 1548 to 1640 Zechlin was the seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty, after which it became the seat of the administration of the Prussian District Office. A castle dominated the townscape up until 1721, before it was destroyed by fire. It was not until 1775 that this church was built as a Classicist hall-type structure.

The church is located on the town square and is visible from a long way off with its light-coloured plaster and square tower. The simple interior, decorated with white plaster, is now regularly used as a venue for concerts and exhibitions. The 1903 organ is the last work of Neuruppin organ builder Hollenbach.

The church is part of the Open Church initiative and is open at weekends from Easter to Thanksgiving.
