This relatively short stage links Hennigsdorf, in Berlin’s leafy suburbs, with Birkenwerder, a favourite day-trip destination for Berliners for over 100 years. Between the two towns, you walk through sparse pine woodland, always close to the River Havel. At the edge of the Havel floodplains, the route heads into the Briesetal valley. Boardwalks lead across the marshy areas, turning the path – charmingly nestled in the landscape – into a nature experience. The tour ends at Birkenwerder railway station. A leisurely route full of variety and beautiful sights.

Length: 13 km (3 1/2 hours)

Start: Hennigsdorf / Finish: Birkenwerder

Route: Hennigsdorf, Birkenwerder

Tour description:

The route starts in Hennigsdorf, a historic industrial town just outside Berlin. You cross the River Havel along a section of the Wall Trail. The route continues through pine forest and then along well-maintained forest paths, running parallel to the River Havel, to the outskirts of Niederheide. Skirting the Havel floodplains, past a marina and two restaurants, you reach Birkenwerder. The final section of the route heads eastwards, along the little river Briese, to the village centre. Woodland alternates with marshy areas accessed via boardwalks. The nature-friendly hiking trail here, which includes a Kneipp facility, is a feast for the eyes. The stage ends at Birkenwerder railway station. The section from Hennigsdorf to the Briese Valley is a delight in every season.

Trail conditions: asphalt paths, paved paths, natural paths, paths with loose surfaces, gravel paths.
