Hussar general and “Zieten cavalryman”
Continue readingcollapse
Hans Joachim von Zieten (1699-1786) was one of the most famous cavalry generals in Prussian history and a close confidant of King Frederick the Great. In the wars fought by Frederick II, Von Zieten proved to be a competent leader of the Hussar Regiment. The so-called “Zieten cavalryman” is famous for being the Hussar general who secured the reinforcement of the main army for his king on May 20, 1745. He enjoyed the special trust of Frederick II, who visited the old Zieten leader frequently and even respected his deep religious faith.

Knights’ Residence in Wustrau

Zieten lived in the knights’ residence in Wustrau from 1726 onwards. In peacetime, he took care of the farm himself, for which King Frederick II repeatedly gave him leave. The king personally handled the building of a new Baroque manor house. He had timber and Rüdersdorf limestone delivered free of charge. The manor house of Hans Joachim von Zieten, which was later extended, is still an important sight in the town today as the seat of the German Knights’ Academy. Castle tours are usually possible on Wednesdays outside the school holidays. The annual Seefestival Wustrau lake festival on the lake stage at the castle also invites visitors to discover the knights’ residence. The grave of the Hussar general is located on the north side of the church in Wustrau. The Brandenburg-Prussian Museum today bears witness to the history of the state.
